Summer is here, and that means it’s time for memorable road trips with your friends and family. Before you set out, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is as ready as your travel mates. Here are a few things you can do to prepare your vehicle for your road trip.

Check Your Tires

Your tires will be used continuously during a road trip, and you want to confirm that they can handle the extra wear and tear.

Examine your tires visually for signs that they need repair or replacing, including gouges, bulges, and uneven treadwear. Your tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles so that they wear evenly.

You should also check your tire’s air pressure. Look on the inside of your driver side door jamb for a small label that states the recommended tire pressure for your car’s make and model.

While you’re on the road, check your air pressure every 1,000 miles, or even more frequently if you’re pulling a trailer or RV. Make sure that you have a spare tire that’s in good condition and the necessary tools to change a tire.

Get Your Car Professionally Detailed

If you’re going to be spending hours in your car, you want to make sure that it’s a clean, pleasant space. Removing items that you don’t need from your vehicle will also improve your fuel economy and provide ample space for luggage, snacks, and other road trip essentials.

A professional vehicle detailing can remove even old stains and spills and will make sure that every surface of your vehicle is clean and gleaming.

Complete Any Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Examine your car’s recommended maintenance schedule, and complete any maintenance tasks that are coming due in the next month or so. Remember, you’ll be putting a lot of miles on your vehicle, and this can expedite your car’s expected maintenance needs.

You should also confirm that all your vehicle’s fluids are at the appropriate levels, including your brake fluid, engine oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid. Don’t forget to top off your windshield wiper fluid!
